Is there a Democratic plan to save DACA? (Not really)

Is there a Democratic plan to save DACA? (Not really)

The chamber voted 97-1 to proceed to debate on a legislative vehicle for members to work out a bill to address the future of almost 700,000 unauthorized immigrants who were brought to the United States as children and were protected from deportation by the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Democrats have hoped that, if the Senate could pass a bill with 60 votes, Trump might signal some openness to the proposal and Ryan would feel the pressure to at least give the bill a vote.

U.S. Senate Republicans on Tuesday turned up the heat on Democrats seeking protections for young "Dreamer" immigrants as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell embraced President Donald Trump's demands for broad changes to the country's immigration policies.

The White House has not weighed in on any of the legislative options, but Trump has insisted that any immigration bill also include funding for a wall along the USA border with Mexico. In addition to protections for "Dreamers," President Trump also wants $25 billion for a border wall with Mexico and other security measures, as well as curbs on legal immigration.

The bill from GOP senators largely sticks to those bullet points, including sharp cuts to family-based migration, ending the diversity lottery and giving federal authorities enhanced deportation and detention powers.

New Horizons is just the fifth spacecraft to speed beyond the outer planets, so many of its activities set distance records. Now, it's heading towards the Kuiper Belt, the circumstellar disk surrounding our solar system .

DACA is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which Democratic former president Barack Obama initiated in 2012 and which has allowed around 700,000 Dreamers to legally study and work in the United States temporarily.

"The time for political posturing is behind us, " said McConnell. Senators voted 97-1 to start the debate Monday night. If a proposal can reach that number, it will likely pass the upper chamber - but face an uncertain future in a House and White House that has not made any commitments to the eventual result.

Schumer wants McConnell to bring up legislation that incorporates Trump's priorities and a second, much narrower bill from Sens.

"Eliminating family based migration, which has been a hallmark of the United States since our inception and another concern is detaining and deporting individuals", said Curtright. Like the Senate, the House should show the president what an authentic majority bill looks like and dare him to veto it.

A bipartisan group calling itself the Common Sense Coalition, led by senators Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, and Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, has been working on its own measure but has not released a plan.

But Trump and conservative Republicans have insisted that any immigration bill also include funding for a wall along the USA border with Mexico, as well as ending "chain family migration" and the diversity visa lottery program.

Cotton also appeared Tuesday on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" to discuss the immigration compromise's chances, saying that Trump's framework bill "is not an opening bid for negotiations".

Cornyn told reporters Tuesday. John McCain, R-Ariz., has been absent in recent weeks battling cancer.

Republicans hold 51 seats.

"It will be an opportunity for a thousand flowers to bloom", Senate Majority Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said about the process. Many Democrats are reluctant to help fund the wall, which is aimed at keeping illegal immigrants out but is seen by many lawmakers as too expensive and too inefficient. However, the Republican Senators who argued for a path to citizenship for the country's 11 million undocumented residents found themselves in a spot in 2016 when Mr. Trump built his campaign on an anti-immigration platform.
