Nest To Merge With Google's Hardware Team

In addition to co-founding the smart home company alongside former Apple product guru Tony Fadell, Rogers also served as chief product officer at Nest.

But from a business perspective, Google is merging with the only other part of Alphabet that now makes money.

Parent company Alphabet Inc. spun Nest into a separate unit following its acquisition of the maker of smart thermostats and fire alarms.

Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz is convinced Google will be able to leverage its AI capabilities on this new thrust as attested by the company's previous gains in the same platform such as advances in the facial recognition area.

He was also quoted in an interview with CNET where he said, "All of Google's investments in machine learning and AI, they can very clearly benefit Nest products. It just makes sense to be developing them together", Osterloh told CNET. We've contacted Google and Nest for clarification and will update the article accordingly.

Alphabet is folding its "smart home" appliance subsidiary Nest back into Google, as it seeks to ward off growing competition from Amazon.

Nest has shipped more than 11 million products since first becoming available in 2011, Fawaz said.

A united front could be helpful in competing with the other ubiquitous digital helpers of today - Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri. The company has said it will be "transparent" about changes made to Nest services but admitted the data may be used for more integrations as part of its "future plans".
