United States sanctions Hamas chief; lists him on terror list

The State Department accused Hamas of being involved in attacks that have resulted in the killing of 17 Americans since the group's founding.

"This decision will not deter us from continuing the resistance option to expel the occupation", it said, referring to Israel's formal occupation of Gaza since 1967.

At the same time, the USA also added three groups to its list terrorist blacklist, including the Iranian-backed Harakat al-Sabireen, and two Egyptian groups, Liwa al-Thawra and Harakat Sawa'd Misr. The decision imposes sanctions on Haniyeh and another Gaza-based terrorist organization that freeze their assets within the United States and prevent U.S. citizens from conducting business with the newly designated terrorists.

It was a failed attempt to keep pressure on the Palestinian armed resistance, Hamas spokesman in Gaza Hazem Qassem said in an emailed statement. "Today's actions are an important step in denying them the resources they need to plan and carry out their terrorist activities".

According to Newsweek, he's also said to have ties to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, a proxy group of Iran, as well as its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

"We reject and condemn the decision and we see it as a reflection of the domination by a gang of Zionists of the American decision", he said.

"These designations target key terrorist groups and leaders - including two sponsored and directed by Iran - who are threatening the stability of the Middle East, undermining the peace process, and attacking our allies Egypt and Israel", said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
