Giants acquire Andrew McCutchen as era ends in Pittsburgh

Andrew McCutchen, the face of the Pittsburgh Pirates for nearly a decade and the player most responsible for the team's return to prominence after 20 years of losing, has been traded to the San Francisco Giants, according to a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Monday, the Pirates agreed to trade McCutchen, the 2013 National League MVP, to the Giants, just two days after dealing No. 1 starter Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros. They had a run of winning season [VIDEO] from 2013-2015, but have fallen off the past two seasons despite having a lot of young positional talent.

A person with direct knowledge of the trade confirmed that it is complete, pending physicals for the players involved. While he likely lacks the ability to play centerfield anymore, no one could be worse defensively than Denard Span last season - so Cutch is an upgrade. In the 20 years after his departure, the team failed to make the postseason.

Israel confirms it destroyed Hamas tunnel under key Gaza crossing
The IDF destroyed the tunnel on Saturday night, describing its running under the border crossing as both "cynical" and "absurd". The reports of the attack were then confirmed by the Israeli army as well.

After a down year in 2016, McCutchen bounced back well in 2017.

He will likely play right field while Hunter Pence moves to left and a gaggle of potential, led by Austin Slater, tries to tackle the vast gerrymandered spaces of center field.

McCutchen batted.279 with 28 home runs and 88 RBIs last season, his ninth with the Pirates.

The 22-year-old is the 17th-best prospect in baseball according to and will become one of the faces of the new era of Pirates baseball.

Salary-wise, he takes the Giants to $191M (including the Matt Cain buyout), allowing them no more real headroom on the luxury threshold.

On one hand, it's a shame McCutchen won't begin and end his career with the same team-something that is increasingly rare in modern sports. They could even move him for a prospect at the trade deadline if things go horribly awry.
