Trump Administration Tells 200000 Salvadorans To Leave Or Get Deported

The Department of Homeland Security, which administers TPS, did not respond to a request for comment.

"The statutory conditions supporting El Salvador's TPS designation on the basis of an environmental disaster, specifically the devastation caused by major earthquakes in 2001, no longer exist", the official said.

Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Monday that damage inflicted by a 2001 natural disaster in the Central American country didn't justify another temporary extension. One official said Salvadorans will have until September 2019 to leave the country or adjust their legal status.

TPS beneficiaries from these nations have an estimated 273,000 USA citizen children (born in the United States).

In November, Nielsen's predecessor, acting Secretary Elaine Duke, ended the protection for Haitians, requiring about 50,000 to leave or adjust their legal status by July 22, 2019, and for Nicaraguans, giving about 2,500 until January 5, 2019.

Nielsen has the ultimate decision on whether to extend El Salvador's status, but advocates on the issue from both sides of the aisle anticipate a similar decision to that on Haiti, a struggling country as well, but one the department says has recovered from its devastating quake in 2010. Salvadorans make up the largest share of immigrants protected by the program, and all of them have lived in the United States since at least 2001.

Homeland Security also said more than 39,000 Salvadorans have returned home from the U.S.in two years, demonstrating El Salvador's capacity to absorb people.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen made the determination after "an extensive outreach campaign" to federal government officials, the Salvadoran government and other partners, including community groups, according to the administration official.

Salvadoran immigrant Orlando Zepeda, who came to the U.S.in 1984 to flee civil war, said he wasn't surprised by Monday's decision given the administration's position on other countries.

The Trump administration has indicated for months that it believes the "temporary" in "temporary protected status" has been wrongly overlooked for too long. "By returning TPS recipients to El Salvador, the United States could be sending people to their deaths".

Sears to shutter more stores
The announced closures reduce the total number of Sears stores in the United States to about 641 from 3,500 locations in 2010. The retailer told employees in a note posted to its web site it was closing 64 Kmart locations and 39 Sears stores.

El Salvador President Salvador Sanchez Ceren spoke by phone Friday with Nielsen to renew his plea to extend status for 190,000 Salvadorans and allow more time for Congress to deliver a long-term fix for them to stay in the U.S. That is more than three times the number of people in the next largest group with the status, Hondurans.

Although administration officials have said protections for current TPS holders should be left to Congress, it's clearly not a priority ― the White House hasn't mentioned it in documents laying out its policy goals on immigration. There are almost 440,000 beneficiaries from the 10 countries, including 263,000 from El Salvador, but many have obtained legal status other ways.

Nielsen said last week that short-term extensions are not the answer. Haitians have also been protected since a 2010 quake. She delayed a decision affecting more than 50,000 Hondurans, foisting the decision onto Nielsen.

Last year, the administration ended those protections for citizens of Haiti and Nicaragua.
