Trump's original tweet, which the magazine denied, claimed Time told him he was "probably" going to be named the magazine's Person of the Year for 2017.

But Trump said he opted to decline because apparently not being given the honor automatically wasn't good enough for him. The magazine sent out a tweet of its own less than three hours later to say Trump "is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year".

Sports and entertainment celebrities had a field day with President Donald Trump's claim about passing on being Time magazine's 2017 Person of the Year. The magazine says it doesn't comment on its choice until publication.

Trump returned to the White House last night after spending the Thanksgiving weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Trump did not specify how the contest would be carried out or who or what would determine the victor of the trophy.

Time did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
