Merkel Wins Again, but Germany Is Changing Course

Moshe Kantor, president of the Brussels-based European Jewish Congress, also welcomed the election news, saying Merkel had "shown tremendous courage and conviction in her support of the revival of Jewish life in Germany" as well as being a "strong supporter of the State of Israel".

But the biggest change to Germany's political scene was the emergence of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as the country's third biggest political force with 12.6 percent of the vote. All signs from SPD leader Martin Schulz Sunday were that they would not join with Merkel in another coalition.

Angela Merkel has won her fourth term as chancellor of Germany, as expected.

The AfD managed to win supporters in the former East Germany but also in Bavaria, the home of Mrs Merkel's sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU). Voters turned away from both major parties, and backed the populist-right Alternative fuer Deutschland (up 8%) and the Free Democrats (up 6%). Since there are 630 seats in the federal parliament, Merkel's CDU/CSU will need to form a coalition with one or more parties to form government.

Donald Trump criticizes Sessions at White House dinner Monday, reports say
Oblivious to the irony, Sessions added that "in this great land, the government does not tell you what to think or what to say". They noted that Trump has seemed to comdemn free speech by criticizing professional athletes for protesting.

The German chancellor will now begin forming a new coalition, which will be a challenge given the loss of her coalition partner the Social Democrats.

The center-left Social Democratic Party fared even worse and plans to abandon the "grand coalition" with Merkel's party to become their opposition in parliament.

AfD, an anti-immigration far-right party along the lines of those gaining ground across Western Europe, is determined to test the laws by which refugees were allowed in.

But co-leader Alexander Gauland struck a harsher tone, vowing that "we will take our country back" and promising to "chase" Merkel.

Aaron Judge breaks Major League Baseball record for most home runs by a rookie
Judge's teammates had to convince him to walk up the dugout steps to acknowledge the fans saluting him at Yankee Stadium. Sabathia was credited with the win for the Yankees for working six innings and giving up four hits and three runs.

What matters is that Ms. Merkel, unlike too many politicians in other countries, was able to convince a majority to vote for stability and common decency, rather than abandon themselves to the hateful rhetoric of division. If so, and I apologise for the unpalatable imagery, Angela Merkel has just given political birth to some frightening offspring - Nazis in the Reichstag building again.

"In the last 20 or 30 years we didn't have real democratic debates in the Bundestag because all the parties are very, very similar".

"We should expect a lot of ambiguity, even hypocrisy, when it comes to climate policy", Oliver Geden, a policy expert with the German Institute for worldwide and Security Affairs in Berlin, tells Nature.

Iran tests new ballistic missile defying USA threats
The missile can carry multiple warheads and its range would make it easily capable of reaching Israel and Saudi Arabia. Rouhani said that the country will boost its military capabilities, from missiles to ground, air and sea forces.
