Former military man named as new leader of British UKIP

Nigel Farage-backed candidate Henry Bolton elected new UKIP leader in shock result.

Bolton's election comes as a surprise as the party's deputy leader Peter Whittle and anti-Islam candidate Anne Marie Waters were considered the favored options, Business Insider reports.

Asked whether Ukip had avoided becoming the "UK Nazi Party", referring to comments he made in the campaign, Mr Bolton told a press conference: "Absolutely, yes".

"I didn't intervene directly in the election campaign but I did make it pretty clear without saying so that if we lurched towards the BNP-type position that I wouldn't stay part of it and nor would anybody else". He's a former soldier who used to be in the Lib Dems.

Kurdish unilateral independence and a deadly impasse
In its statement, the United States urged both Baghdad and Erbil to remain focused on fighting the Islamic State. Baghdad , Ankara and Tehran have dismissed the results of a secession referendum by the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Instead, Ukip's fourth leader inside a year is a low-key technocrat who has worked for the United Nations, stood as a Liberal Democrat MP and ran on the pledge to professionalise and unite a party riven by splits and seeking a new objective following the Brexit referendum.

"The nature of Islam and the practices are such that they tend to have a more dominating effect in a community where there's a large Muslim population than the Christian community", he said.

On his personal website, Bolton says he will "resume Nigel Farage's legacy by restoring UKIP's relevance and authority".

Despite being relatively unknown, the ex-Thames Valley police officer, who joined the party in 2014, is no stranger to running for elected posts.

Mr Bolton said he believes in "old-fashioned, classical liberalism", but feels it has "lost its way a bit".

Mr Bolton did, however, signal he could be the latest in a long line of Ukip leaders to act as a scourge of liberals.

The result came after the party unveiled a new logo - which cost around £2,000 to develop - replacing the pound sign with a lion. His replacement Dianne James lasted just 18 days and the front runner to succeed her quit the party after an altercation with a colleague left him in hospital.

After exactly three years as leader, Mr Farage resigned to fight the Buckingham seat of Commons Speaker John Bercow at the 2010 election, subsequently coming third with 17 per cent of the vote.
