Turkish Security Officials Indicted for Attacking US Protesters

Nineteen people have been indicted on charges of attacking protesters outside the Turkish embassy in Washington, D.C., during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's diplomatic visit with President Donald Trump in May.

Tuesday's grand jury decision means that a total of 19 people - 15 identified as Turkish security officials - have now been charged over their roles in the violence on 17 May during Mr Erdogan's state visit to the US.

Sixteen of the defendants were already charged on June 13 by the Metropolitan Police Department, two of whom have been arrested and will be facing initial court hearings on September 7.

Ozoguz, 50, a Hamburg-born German citizen with Turkish roots, should be "dumped in Anatolia", Gauland told a rally. Her priority was to focus on root causes of economic migration and push for fairer distribution across the EU.

Calling the decision "biased, unfounded and purely political", the ministry reiterated that the incident that took place outside the Turkish embassy on May 16, 2017 in Washington was caused by the negligence of USA authorities. The State Department has barred the Erdogan security officials implicated in the attack from re-entering the U.S.

Video recorded of Erdogan during the incident suggests that he may have ordered his bodyguards to launch the strike. Numerous 19 were also indicted on additional charges including assault with a unsafe weapon and aggravated assault.

Overall, the indictments are brought against 15 Turkish security officials, two Turkish-American businessmen and two Canadian citizens. Now is the time to demand the immediate extradition of President Erdogan's security detail, and for the Republic of Turkey to pay reparations to the victims of these heinous crimes.

The conspiracy to commit a crime of violence charge carries a maximum of 15 years in prison, and the bias enhancements add another 7 ½ years if found true.

The Turkish Embassy claimed the protesters, who were located across the street from the Embassy, were members of a terror group. "Our reaction to the topic has also been conveyed to the US ambassador to Ankara", the Turkish foreign ministry statement said. ".indictment. -.aug.29, .2017.pdf" target="_blank">indictment also recognized that the attackers "significantly outnumbered" the anti-Erdogan protesters and "blatantly ignored American law enforcement commands to cease the violence".

While Tuesday's indictment confirmed that activists involved in May's attack supported Kurdish independence, court documents insisted that the protest was peaceful.

Trump Concedes US 'May Fund' Border Wall But Mexico Will 'Ultimately' Pay
Trump on Sunday made a similar claim in a tweet insisting Mexico would pay for the wall "through reimbursement/other". It said the crime is a "shared problem" for both countries and is caused in part by US' demand for Mexican narcotics.
