Trump turns on GOP Sen. Corker over 'competence' comment

The Tennessee senator sparked backlash from Trump when he slammed the president's response to the racially charged violence in Charlottesville, Va., earlier this month.

That response clearly leaves the door open to a potential Republican primary challenge to Corker from Green, who was tapped by President Trump to serve as Secretary of the Army in April. One of Trump's sons, Eric, addressed the Nashville gathering on Thursday night. Bob Corker (Tenn.) on Twitter on Friday after Corker criticized him during a Rotary Club meeting last week in Chattanooga, Tenn. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., another Trump critic in the party, while sparring for days with Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell.

Carr's tea party-styled primary challenge of U.S. Sen. Corker called the ad tacky and said it should stop running, but it took the RNC almost a week to pull it off the air. Lindsey O. Graham, R-S.C., a longtime Trump punching bag.

During the 2016 presidential election, Corker worked as a foreign policy adviser to Trump, and is now the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is personally closer to Trump than most GOP senators.

Trump's brewing feud with Corker is even more remarkable because Corker is the rare Republican senator who has developed something of a personal relationship with the president.

"The president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful", Corker told reporters in Tennessee.

Corker hasn't said yet whether he'll seek re-election in 2018.

Corker's comments drew considerable media attention, but for a full week Trump resisted responding.

The president's rebuttal of Corker's comments comes a day after White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called them "ridiculous and outrageous".

"Tennessee not happy!" the president added.

"You know, we don't always agree, but to be in a position where you can affect outcomes like that is unusual", he said.
