Social media responds to Mbete's decision on no-confidence vote

"I determine the voting in the motion of no confidence in the president on the 8th of August will be by secret ballot".

Shortly after the briefing the ruling African National Congress (ANC) released a statement, insisting a secret vote would not change the outcome as the party has full confidence in its members to toe the party line.

Ms Mbete told a press conference on Monday afternoon that her decision was "about putting the resilience of our democratic institutions to test" and was taken "in the best interests of the country".

A group of ANC veterans from the anti-apartheid struggle also called for lawmakers to vote against Zuma, who was himself imprisoned with Nelson Mandela on Robben Island under white-minority rule.

Voting for Vice-Presidential election begins in Parliament
Venkaiah Naidu , with 516 votes, had polled the highest number of votes for a vice-presidential candidate in 33 years. In the previous NDA government led by party patriarch Atal Bihari Vajpayee , he served as rural development minister.

After Mbete previously claimed she did not have the power to decide on a secret ballot, opposition parties approached the highest court in the land, the Constitutional Court, which decreed that the parliament speaker did have such authority. Business Leadership South Africa, (BLSA), has nailed it's colours to the SA mast, advising members to give their staff time off on Tuesday to join the mass protest without losing pay or any benefits.

"The speaker must do that without fear or favour", Mbete said in her speech.

"Zuma is likely to remain even if a few MPs vote against him".

Mbete's announcement may have come against the background of a governing party confident it holds the numbers in its parliamentary caucus to defeat the motion. Cope leader Mosiua Lekota said the secret ballot was "the only right decision any Speaker could have made", and that this was "groundbreaking".

The inmates are between 18 to 30 years old and were jailed on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to attempted murder. Six of the inmates remained on the loose, the statement said, including two who were serving time for attempted murder.

Mr. Zuma, had survived four no-confidence votes during his eight years in power thanks to loyal voting by African National Congress, ANC, lawmakers, who form a strong parliamentary majority.

Tomorrow's vote of no confidence was not a "silver bullet that will rescue our ailing country but it is the critical step that South Africa needs to start taking back our democracy".

"This has also been necessitated by strong information at our disposal, which indicates that opposition parties will continue to mislead our communities to partake in their plans when the motion of no confidence fails", said ANC KwaDukuza regional secretary Thabani Mdlalose.
