Hiroshima Marks 72nd Anniversary of World War II Atomic Bombings

On Sunday, Japan marked 72 years since the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, destroying a portion of the city and its inhabitants, and heralding the end of World War II.

But Japan, together with the world's nuclear weapon states and other countries under the USA umbrella have recently refused to participate in the United Nations treaty.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the world can truly be free of such weapons only through the participation of both nuclear and non-nuclear states.

The U.N. estimates nations around the world still have some 15,000 nuclear weapons in their arsenals.
