The opposition is expected to name a candidate to challenge Abassi, a staunch Sharif loyalist and former oil minister. The PML-N leader added that Shehbaz would continue to oversee matters in Punjab indirectly, while his elder brother Nawaz Sharif would govern the Centre from his Raiwind residence. In Pakistan's perpetual tug-of-war between its military and civilian branches, Sharif has had a strained relationship with the army, which was behind both his previous dismissals.
