Twin toddlers die after pulled from backyard pool on Long Island

When police arrived at her home, they found Anthony in the pool, according to the department's press release.

"My members described it as that they just could not see at the bottom of the pool", Melville Assistant Chief David Kaplan said. She called 911 and started CPR on her son. She reportedly told first responders she did not know where the second twin was.

The twin boys were later transported to a local hospital, but could not be saved. The woman's 5-year-old son was also in the house and did not go into the pool.

NBC News has identified the twin boys as Nicholas and Anthony Aurilia, and said the boys, both autistic, are believed to have slipped out the back door of the home while their mother was sleeping.

Medics and police officers jumped in the pool - which was "murky" and hard to navigate - and retrieved the other boy from the bottom, officials said.

Israel considers removing metal detectors in return for security guard
Palestinians have been angered by the installation of metal detectors at the shrine with some calling for a "day of rage". Israel erected the screening devices after two policemen were shot dead by Arab assailants in the mosque vicinity.

CPR was performed on the toddlers as they were rushed to the hospital, but they did not survive.

"The hospital worked feverishly for a different outcome, but it was not to be today", Andrea Mineo, a hospital spokeswoman said shortly before noon.

It's unclear, Beyrer said, how the children got out of the house and into the backyard. A five-year-old boy in the house was unharmed.

Suffolk County Police Department homicide Lt. Kevin Beyrer said: "Everything appears to be an accident".

Personnel from the Town of Huntington have been dispatched to check the property and pool for violations.
