Israel considers removing metal detectors in return for security guard

Tensions have boiled over in recent days after Israel installed metal detectors at the Jerusalem shine that both religions share as a revered site, while turning away all Muslim men under the age of 50.

Sweden's Deputy U.N. Ambassador Carl Skau posted on Twitter after the meeting that Security Council members "agree on need for de-escalation, condemnation of violence and urgent dialogue to calm tensions in Jerusalem". The spate of violence has also included a Palestinian attacker stabbing three Israelis to death on Friday, with three Palestinians killed hours before.

"The Quartet envoys reiterate that violence deepens mistrust and is fundamentally incompatible with achieving a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", said the statement.

Saturday's protest started as hundreds of Palestinians held their evening prayers outside the al-Aqsa Mosque, refusing to be subjected to the new Israeli security measures there.

The Islamic Waqf, which runs the holy site and has called for Muslims to pray outside Al-Aqsa until the metal detectors are removed, has said it would only accept a return to the previous arrangements.

Palestinians have been angered by the installation of metal detectors at the shrine with some calling for a "day of rage". Then Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon's visit to the site in 2000 provoked the second intifada, or Palestinian uprising, which lasted four years and resulted in the deaths of thousands.

There was no immediate public reaction from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
