Iraqi security forces in the Bab al-Jadeed district of Mosul prepared to take full control of the city on Saturday after reporting the defensive lines of the group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are collapsing.

Mosul -Iraq will announce imminently a final victory in the almost nine-month offensive to retake Mosul from jihadists, a U.S. general said on Saturday, as celebrations broke out among police forces in the city.

Scattered PM showers and storms
As the next system moves through, a few showers and storms will be possible, especially afternoon and early evening. The end result will not only be dreary weather with occasional rain, but also milder weather with highs in the 70s.

Artillery explosions and gunfire could still be heard during Saturday afternoon and a column of smoke billowed over the Old City riverside.

Stripped of Mosul, Islamic State's dominion in Iraq will be reduced to mainly rural, desert areas west and south of the city where tens of thousands of people live.

But as they lose most of the territory they brought under their control about three years ago, ISIS militants are making use of hit-and-run and surprise attacks.

Last month, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the destruction of the ancient mosque in the city of Mosul was "an official declaration of defeat" by IS.

In Mosul on Saturday, jubilant interior ministry forces - whose mission has been declared over - were seen flashing V-for-victory signs and posing for selfies in front of each other holding up IS's notorious black flag upside down.
