Trump says he is sending federal help to quell Chicago violence

According to Reuters, there were more than 760 murders in 2016 in Chicago. The A.T.F. and other federal law enforcement agencies already have large field offices in Chicago, and have frequently partnered with the local police on investigations.

The announcement comes ahead of July 4, often one of the deadliest periods in Chicago.

Authorities confirmed to The Chicago Sun-Times on Thursday that about 20 additional agents with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been sent to the city.

Breitbart News reported that Chicago had almost 4,400 shootings and almost 800 homicides in 2016.

"Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help", he tweeted Friday morning.

Three doctors hurt in NY hospital shooting, gunman dead
According to a police spokesman, authorities responded to reports of "several people shot" at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital. Multiple people were shot, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately known, according to police.

His remarks have drawn some pointed responses from the local police.

The president, who in January decried the high crime rate in the third-most populous US city as "carnage", did not specify what type of help he planned to send.

"The police have been demoralized in many ways", he said.

Trump has yet to specify what type of federal assistance he plans to provide.

In fact, earlier this week, officials announced that the ATF had loaned the city a van outfitted with ballistic testing equipment to help police more quickly solve gun crimes.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in the press release that the task force "will significantly help our police officers stem the flow of illegal guns and create a culture of accountability for the small subset of individuals and gangs who disproportionately drive violence in our city".

"Six months ago we made it clear that we would welcome additional federal support, and six months later we appreciate the 20 new A.T.F. agents that are now arriving", said Adam Collins, a spokesman for Mr. Emanuel, in a statement.

Dubbed the Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force, the group consists of ATF agents and counterparts from the Chicago Police Department and Illinois State Police, who will work to investigate shootings and gun traffickers through ballistics technology, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

There have been over 30,000 gun-related incidents across the U.S. in the first six months of this year, according to figures from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA).
