Google Will Finally Stop Scanning Your Emails to Personalize Gmail Ads

Google unexpectedly announced on Friday that they will cease the practice of scanning inboxes of their free Gmail users to target those users with personalized AdWords Ads.

The decision - made by Google's cloud and business software unit - hopes to attract more corporate customers to its G Suite set of services, in a bid to better compete with Microsoft's Office.

Google is a company which is known to have been practising the habit of scanning the contents of individual Gmail users for advertising purposes. "Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change". Users can opt out of seeing personalized ad by simply accessing their account settings.

The fact that Google is willing to prioritize the needs of its enterprise business over ad revenues represents a major shift for a company that has always depended on advertising for the core of its business. However, as a report in Bloomberg points, ads will still be a part of the consumer version of Gmail.

This new development by Google helps it maintain the privacy of Gmail users and averts criticism or the issue of privacy blowing up further.

It's important to note that the company is not ending email scanning altogether and will still rely on the process for its "smart reply" feature, alongside spam filtering and malware detection. The problem is that many people don't like the idea of Google scanning their emails and as a result Google has promised to stop doing this.

The practice had stirred privacy worries and raised concerns among many users. Google Cloud therefore decided to make the two more aligned as they look towards their bright future indicated by their growth. Instead of mining data from your Gmail inbox, Google will look at the YouTube videos you watch, the Google searches you request, the websites you visit and the apps you use. Google's blogpost also says they will "keep privacy and security paramount", for their users.

We can not be the people that tells our children and grandchildren what the concept of privacy once meant, and why we no longer have it.
