US Navy Destroyer Collides With Merchant Ship Near Japan

Among them was the USS Fitzgerald's commanding officer, Bryce Benson, who was evacuated by helicopter and was in a stable condition at a U.S. navy hospital in the Japanese city, the navy said.

Cmdr Bryce Benson was reported to be in stable condition, the Navy said.

Officials said the early-morning collision caused "significant damage" to the USA destroyer, including flooding areas such as the machinery space and radio room.

A U.S. destroyer has arrived back in its home port after colliding with a container ship four times its size, leaving seven sailors missing.

Adm. John Richardson, chief of naval operations, said in a statement: "As more information is learned, we will be sure to share to it with the Fitzgerald families and when appropriate the public".

The Navy said that the collision occurred 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, a city south of Tokyo that is home to the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet.

Once the ship arrived in Yokosuka, divers began inspecting the damage and developing a plan for repairs and inspection of the spaces, a release said.

The vessel was taking on water after the incident, but the crew was working to stabilize the ship by pumping water out of the hold, a US Navy official told CNN.

Bonobos fans aren't happy about the Walmart takeover
Shortly before Walmart bought Jet, the online retailer had purchased ShoeBuy for about $70 million. And Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford and his team are still at the helm of their outdoor-focused site.

The Japan Coast Guard sent patrol vessels and an airplane and Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force dispatched a helicopter to search for the missing crew members, joined by a USA aircraft.

The 7th fleet said the collision was with the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel ACX Crystal.

The area, where the collision took place, is particularly busy with sea traffic, Yutaka Saito of the Japanese coast guard AP news.

NHK said the massive container vessel made a sharp turn around the time of the collision with the smaller U.S. warship, but its captain suggested otherwise.

The Navy's 7th Fleet reported the developments in an update on the stricken ship that was nearing the port of Yokosuka in Japan.

Japan's Nippon Yusen KK, which charters the container ship, ASX Crystal, said in a statement it would "cooperate fully" with the Coast Guard's investigation of the incident.

US and Japanese military ships continued to scour the waters near the crash site for sign of the seven missing soldiers.

The ACX Crystal - which sailed to a Tokyo port Saturday - is a commercial container ship with a Filipino crew, according to its Japanese owner, NYK Line.

Rep. Steve Scalise among several shot at congressional baseball practice
In addition to Barth, two law enforcement officers, one Congressional representative, and the shooter were the only ones injured. Jeff Flake , R-Ariz., removed his belt, which Williams used as a tourniquet to stanch the bleeding from Barth's leg wound.

The rules require that ships must have a watch posted at all times and follow a number of collision-avoidance steps when crossing paths with or overtaking other vessels.

Neither of the vessels involved in the collision were in danger of sinking, the Japan Coast Guard said earlier.

Benson took command of the Fitzgerald on May 13.

The USS Dewey and two Navy tugboats had been dispatched to provide assistance, the Navy said.

A U.S. Navy destroyer has collided with a merchant ship off the coast of Japan, the U.S. military said, and there have been injuries.

"We're going all out in the search to find these missing people... but we still haven't found any clues as to where they might be", a coastguard spokesman said. The extent of the injuries remains unclear.

The area can become congested with vessels coming and going from Tokyo Bay, the coast guard said, as well as with vessels navigating through the Pacific Ocean form both the east and the west.
