United Kingdom set for coalition government after May's Conservatives lose seats

Former DUP Stormont minister Edwin Poots once hit out at a gay rugby team in Belfast, accusing it of introducing a sporting "apartheid" against heterosexual players. But the ballot-box humiliation has seriously — and possibly mortally — wounded her leadership just as Britain is about to begin complex exit talks with the European Union. The poor performance of the Scottish Nationalists yesterday is the most obvious example: Surprise losses to the Tories in Scotland probably saved May's bacon as much as anything else, and the SNP is acknowledging it may have to shelve plans for a second independence referendum given its signs of weakness.

The party said it would be willing to negotiate with May but declined to comment on reports a deal had already been reached.

Mrs May is to stay in office with the support of her "friends" in the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) after the Conservatives failed to win a majority in the snap election she called.

Northern Ireland is the only remaining part of the United Kingdom where same-sex marriage is not legal after the DUP used a controversial veto mechanism to block any change to legislation.

The Labour Party landed at 261 seats, up 29 seats since the last elections, a major gain for Jeremy Corbyn, who no one expected to deliver such a stellar performance.

Nigel Farage, a member of the European Parliament and the UK's best-known Brexit supporter said May's credibility is now "fatally damaged in the eyes of the European Union" and that he expects "a significant backslide" on Brexit itself.

She said the Conservatives' planned deal with the DUP was "dodgy" and "unsustainable" - and Theresa May's position was "not remotely tenable" because she lacked the skills to hold together a minority government, which has to be more open and collegiate.

With the DUP providing the Conservatives a narrow, but crucial, majority in Parliament, it could have an outsized influence.

As negotiations continue, Mr Corbyn insists he could still become prime minister, vowing to fight Ms May's attempt to run a minority government.

The fact that May was forced to rely on the DUP in parliament further complicates Brexit negotiations for her.

And although it has a female leader, it remains an overwhelmingly male, white bastion and is certainly more conservative than the Conservatives. This would give the Tories the numbers to pass a Queen's Speech on June 19, which will set out their legislative agenda.

That did not help May, who in her previous role as interior minister for six years had overseen cuts in the number of police officers.

Senior Conservatives said there was no longer support in Parliament for a so-called "hard Brexit" after the party saw its Commons majority wiped out.

If there is any consolation for May and the Conservatives, it is that following Thursday's election, Scotland is not leaving the United Kingdom anytime soon.

May had spent the campaign denouncing Corbyn as the weak leader of a spendthrift party that would crash Britain's economy and flounder in Brexit talks, while she would provide "strong and stable leadership" to clinch a good deal for Britain.
