U.S. employers add modest 138000 jobs; unemployment rate at 4.3 percent

The U.S. economy added 138,000 jobs in May, according to the monthly jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday morning.

The low unemployment rate demonstrates that the labor market is tight.

"Through the volatility, we believe the trend in employment growth remains more than strong enough to keep unemployment trending down and the trend in wage gains upward", he said in a research note. Since January, the unemployment rate has fallen by a half a percentage point and the number of unemployed has declined by 774,000.

The share of people who are either working or job hunting relative to everyone in their prime working age - the labor-force participation rate - declined to 62.7% from 62.9%. It plans to open 47 franchises before year's end, adding more than 400 jobs. The employment to population ratio also fell in May to 60% from 60.2% in April. Mining grew by 7,000 and bars and restaurants added 38,000.

"The loss of manufacturing jobs in May is a stark reminder of the challenges that face factory workers: declining auto sales, a persistently high goods trade deficit, and muddled fiscal policies", said Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul in a statement.

Hiring slowed substantially in May as employers added 138,000 jobs but the disappointing showing likely won't stop the Federal Reserve from raising interest rates this month.

David Berson, chief economist for Nationwide, was much more negative.
