World leaders reaffirm commitment to fighting climate change

President Donald Trump is expected to announce his decision on whether to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord Thursday afternoon USA time (3 p.m. EDT; 1900 GMT).

Abandoning the pact would isolate the United States from a raft of worldwide allies who spent years negotiating the 2015 agreement to fight global warming and pollution by reducing carbon emissions.

European Council President Donald Tusk made a personal appeal to Mr Trump not to pull Washington out of the Paris climate agreement.

Uncertainties in global political and economic situation are growing, while at the same time the trend of peace, development and cooperation as well as economic globalization is irresistible, said Li.

"Both countries are ready to make their contribution to peace and stability in the world, in their respective regions, on various important issues", he said.

Unmasking requests are not uncommon, said Charles Price, a former FBI agent who worked at the bureau for almost three decades. Russian officials had pledged to wait for Trump to take office before reacting but last month said they might retaliate.

Russian Federation joined the chorus, saying that the deal will be less effective without its key participants.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Britain would continue to press Washington to reduce unsafe emissions even if Mr Trump pulls out.

"President (Vladimir) Putin signed this convention in Paris".

Ms Merkel also tackled civil rights, saying she and Mr Li had resolved the issue of German political foundations working in China which she said were crucial for a stronger civil society.

"The Americans can't just exit this climate protection treaty", EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who is to be among the officials meeting Li, said in a speech in Berlin on Wednesday.

Despite being on different sides in the war, Macron also accepted representatives of the Syrian leader should be at future talks. Putin said that the two nations want to cooperate in resolving the crises, including in Ukraine.

However, thorny issues remain between the two exporting nations, with Merkel insisting that China opens up its markets and that German firms operating there should have a level playing field. "At a moment in which the United States have doubts about the benefits of remaining in the Paris agreement ... two major players in the climate arena declare that they are committed to the Paris agreement", he said of the European Union and China.

Chinese Premier Li praised enhanced ties with Germany, and said they had common views on many issues, including respect for worldwide law and opposition to unilateralism.

Other European leaders issued more explicit appeals to the U.S. government not to abandon worldwide measures against climate change.

"A U.S. withdrawal from Paris sends a strong signal that, at the national policy level, there is little interest in Washington playing a leading role in this transition, with the impetus shifting to the US' major trading partners", he said.
