What Jose Mourinho told his four debutants before Crystal Palace win

With an eye on the big prize next Wednesday when the Red Devils take on Ajax in the Europa League final, Mourinho has made a decision to give his first-team squad some much needed rest on the final day of the Premier League season.

Mata is bullish about United's prospects against Ajax but there is also an acknowledgment that a second successive season without Champions League football, and another debilitating campaign in the Europa League, would make a concerted title push harder next term.

And it seems that Mourinho is concentrating fully on Wednesday's final, and couldn't even spare a moment to talk to journalists after Sunday's win against Crystal Palace. "We like to play good football and hope to win".

United's past successes in Europe have seen them lift the European Cup/Champions League on three occasions, most recently in 2008, and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

Mourinho handed full debuts to four youngsters in an experimental line-up against Palace, and he said in his notes for the contest at Old Trafford: "Like everyone else we (will have) played 38 Premier League matches this season".

"I would prefer to give them debuts like I gave to Axel against Reading, to Joel against Wigan - or a big match, but for one player".

Does he think this Celtics team has what it takes to dethrone the King next season? "It's too stressful, and I'm not stressed right now".

Palace manager Sam Allardyce insists, though, that his side has no shortage of incentives at Old Trafford.

"I just want to thank the manager for putting me on the bench and playing me today, and all the staff back at the club and everyone who has helped me".

While the United players were doing their customary end-of-season lap of honour, Mourinho have MUTV a very short interview before heading in to meet the press.

Jones has suffered another injury-troubled season, starting only 24 of United's 63 games in all competitions, but Mourinho has generally been impressed with the his commitment levels. "I am always open to learning".
