Security situation in Afghanistan likely to get worse: US intel chief

The top US intelligence official said on Thursday security in Afghanistan would deteriorate even further without a modest increase in troops from the United States and its allies for the NATO-led force.

Previous reports on the Pentagon's Afghan War plans, then yet to be presented to President Trump, presented them as uniformly in favor of escalation, with the plans varying from a 3,000 troop buildup to one with upwards of 5,000 more U.S. ground troops sent to the country.

America has about 8,400 troops in Afghanistan.

"What we promised was to stop the cuts, gradually increase and then move towards 2 percent", Stoltenberg said. "And, actually, Germany and numerous European allies have started to do exactly that", he added.

President Trump Signs Cyber Security Executive Order
Too much time and money have been spent protecting old federal IT systems, some of which store US citizens' data, he said. Bossert said an open Internet and collaboration is key "to finding what is and is not acceptable".

Stoltenberg said: "We will address our presence in Afghanistan at the leaders' meeting but we will also address what North Atlantic Treaty Organisation can do to step up its efforts to fight terrorism, including providing support to the counter-ISIL coalition".

Lt-Gen Vincent Stewart, the Defence Intelligence Agency's director, told a Senate panel on Thursday that the United States must do "something very different" in Afghanistan or else the Taliban will make new advances on the battlefield.

So it's no surprise that some elements of a new Afghanistan strategy started to emerge in the press this week as the result of an internal review, including bumping up USA forces there by 3,000 beyond the (approximate) current troop level of 9,000.

Australia now has 270 troops stationed in Afghanistan for training and technical assistance to Afghan troops.

Prosecutors subpoena Flynn associates in Russian Federation probe
He and Mr Warner have invited Mr Comey to testify before the committee on May 16 in a closed session. Both the Trump administration and Russian Federation deny any involvement in the alleged activity.

INSIDE STORY: Can the Taliban in Afghanistan be defeated? "And that's one thing that he was also very clear on in the campaign - and as president - that he is going to do everything he can to fight radical Islamic terrorism, to root out and destroy ISIS", he said.

The Council for Protection and Stability in Afghanistan (CPSA) on Thursday said they are against the U.S and NATO's move to increase the number of foreign troops in Afghanistan. Last month, the United States dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb ever deployed in combat in Afghanistan, targeting an Islamic State group complex.

The NATO-led Resolute Support mission has been operating in Afghanistan since January 2015.
