Texas governor signs ban on so-called 'sanctuary cities'

Republican Governor Greg Abbott singed the ban on Facebook live stream late on Sunday, without any advance notification, arguing that the measure would "keep us safe".

The governor signed the controversial bill at 6:30 p.m. using Facebook live on the official page of the Texas governor. The new legislation comes with legal consequences for those who don't comply with the law.

The new law allows government entities to be fined $25,500 for each day the law is violated, as well as a class A misdemeanor charge for sheriffs, police chiefs and constables who fail to comply and removal from office for elected and appointed officials, the governor's office said. Opponents of the law have likened it to Arizona's "papers please" law, parts of which were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

In March, US. Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatened to cut federal funds from the so-called sanctuary cities and states that will not comply with immigration laws. Republicans have a strong majority in the Legislature and shoved aside Democratic objections, even as President Donald Trump's efforts to withhold federal funding for sanctuary cities have hit roadblocks in federal courts.

Afghan security fires on census workers, killing 1
But the Afghan government said Pakistan was warned not to conduct census in villages on the border which housed divided families. Afghan security officials told VOA a civilian was killed on their side while a border police personnel was wounded.

The law allows police to inquire about the immigration status of anyone they detain, a situation that can range from arrest for a crime to being stopped for a traffic violation.

The timing of the signing caught Democratic lawmakers flatfooted.

"Texas has now banned sanctuary cities in the Lone Star State", Abbott declared during the video. The number of ICE detentions and deportations from California has dropped since the state passed the Trust Act in October 2013, which set limits on California state law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities. "With this bill we are doing away with those that seek to promote lawlessness in Texas", Abbott said.

Abbott's signing of the bill, which was one of his top four priorities for this legislative session, capped a bitter fight that has soured relationships within and between the parties. She said before Abbott sign it that she would conform to the ban if it became law.

Convention of states supporters say that's the point since Congress won't stop out of control spending until the states force it to.

"This is not the Texas I know", Terri Burke, executive director of the ACLU of Texas said in a news release.
