Indian benchmark indices decline on Wednesday

Brokers said apart from weak global cues, investors booked profit after recent gains, pushing the indices down.

The benchmark BSE Sensex was up 63 points or 0.21 percent at 29,983 in early trade, while the broader Nifty index was up 16 points or 0.18 percent at 9,330.

The wider 51-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was also trading 24.90 points or 0.27 per cent lower at 9,335 points. It hit a low of 29,823.60 before ending at 29,858.80, down 267.41 points, or 0.89 per cent, its biggest single day fall since March 22 when it had lost 317.77 points.

On the other hand, Tata Motors (3.35%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.77%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.17%), Maruti Suzuki India (1.02%), Reliance Industries (0.89%), and Cipla (0.87%) were the major losers in the Sensex. Financial markets in Japan and South Korea are shut today for a public holiday. Power Grid (+2.43%), TCS (+1.63%) were the top gainers on Sensex too, while Lupin (-2.79%), Adani Ports (-1.62%) traded lower.
