Huge indeed: $107 million in donations for Trump's inaugural

POWERED by billionaires and corporations, President Donald Trump raised US$107 million for his inaugural festivities, documents filed with the Federal Election Commission show, and almost double the record set by President Barack Obama eight years before.

Donald Trump may have micromanaged his own inauguration, but apparently that doesn't mean he will account for how all of the money raised for his inauguration was spent - even though it was more than twice as much as that spent on the first inauguration of his predecessor, Barack Obama.

After giving $5 million, Las Vegas gaming billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife had prime seats for Trump's swearing-in ceremony on January 20 and gained access to a private lunch with the new president and lawmakers at the Capitol. He and his wife came away with prime seats for Trump's swearing-in ceremony on January 20 and gained access to a private lunch with the new president and lawmakers at the Capitol.

The report also shows the influence of large corporations, who can not give directly to candidates during the campaign: Bank of America, Pfizer, Boeing, Dow Chemical and AT&T each gave $1 million to support Trump during the lead-up to the inauguration.

Jimmy Fallon and Harry Styles took over 'SNL' and it was hilarious
Harry also poked fun at his new solo career as he impersonated Mick Jagger in a sketch based on Family Feud . In addition to being the musical guest on the show, Harry Styles also appeared in a couple of sketches.

Health care, energy and beverage companies were also among the many businesses giving $250,000 or more.

The committee has said it would donate leftover funds to charities but has not identified which charities will receive money or how much. President Trump gave final approval to construction of the pipeline in February. Kerrigan said the inaugural events may have served as an opportunity for donors who held back during the presidential campaign to try to curry favor by showing support for the incoming president. Trump's inaugural committee doesn't have to disclose what it spent the money on or how much was left over.

Bank of America was another $1 million donor.

Those megadonors contributed to Trump's monster inauguration haul of almost $107 million, the FEC forms show.

AT&T gave almost $2.1m in cash and services. Clifford Forrest, owner of the Rosebud Mining Co, gave $1 million. The Republican National Committee refused a contribution from the USA citizen in 2000, citing news reports at the time that cautioned about his ties to Russian business. AT&T donated $4.6 million to the 2013 Obama inauguration, according to OpenSecrets.

Obama accepted gifts only up to US$50,000 in 2009, while banning gifts from lobbyists and corporations altogether.

Billionaire investor Paul Singer gave $1 million after long expressing skepticism about Trump.

During his daily briefing Wednesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked whether he was concerned about any real or perceived conflicts, given that many inaugural donors will be affected by actions taken by the Trump administration. As a 501 (c)(4) organization, for example, the committee could use some of the money to give bonuses to staff, but IRS rules say the committee couldn't operate primarily to benefit a small group of individuals. For his second, he raised the limit to $1 million and allowed corporate contributions.

The commission plans to draft a proposal in the next few months and let the public weigh in on the plan before a vote is held. The court had earlier directed the companies and the unions to resolve dispute through mediation.
